How To Live Alone As A Single Woman
Upon moving to London last month, I took the not insignificant financial decision to find a place by myself. I had lived under other people’s feet for too long: with bourgeois Parisians; in Belgium, as an au pair, with four girls to look after; in my crazy family home, littered with cat toys and exploding poufs. While every one else is piling into flat-shares in Clapham and Hackney, I have my own tiny, slightly ramshackle little place, with a noisy oven and a hole cut for the fridge in the wardrobe.
But it is mine. When I say I have recently moved to London, people automatically assume I share, and are surprised to hear I have my own place.
Living Alone As A Woman
As Ronan said, 'Don't post your first and last name; that immediately identifies you as a single woman living alone.' Nobody needs to know that. Nobody needs to know that. The largest percentage of single female buyers is found in the 72 and older age group, the NAR reports. And while the number of single women buying houses goes up with age, it drops for single men. With that freedom comes the obligation to be more self-aware. As a way to teach you how to live alone, and safely, I want to share my stories, laden with obvious mistakes and mishaps. How can the answer be improved?
I recognise that the finances are what make lots of young people reticent about living alone. Like I say, it was not an inconsiderable financial decision, and I have made sacrifices.

I walk to work to save on tube fares, make a packed lunch every day, rarely drink (alcohol ratchets up costs, especially in London) and collect Tesco coupons avidly. Living by oneself is expensive. But maybe it is just better at any (adult) age. Living alone does not mean you are an unfriendly, miserable git. It means you respect your own and others’ space, enjoy freedom, and, if you are anything like me, enjoy being able to spray newspapers all over the floor on a Sunday morning without anyone tutting.
One quick Google search brings up dozens of results on living alone, many arguing that those who do so are happy and healthier than those who cohabit. On a prosaic level, I wager that the lack of irritating arguments about who has done the washing up/not taken out the bins when one lives alone could easily be a significant factor in that.
A 2012 study led by a psychologist at San Diego State University, and published by the American Psychological Association, reported that Americans born in the 80s and 90s are more self-centred than the baby-boomers who came before them. If the same is true in the UK, my living alone might be a sign of that “selfish” generation. But it’s a criticism I’m willing to take. I live alone because it means I can do exactly what I want, when I want.
